It could be the transmission possibly. A few years ago my buddy had a Mercury Sable and he had similar problems that you are having. He would give it gas and the RPM's would rise but the car wouldn't move for a second or two then it would magically accelerate sluggishly. My be worth checking out.

The way mercedesmisery describes it, they would give it gas and the engine would not rev, it's a slow rise in rpm's when they floor it.
Could very well be a problem with the turbo.
Might have a Mercedes service tech have a look at it.
