You lose between 10%-20% of your power because propane needs much more air/fuel to run, in order to get the power back you'll have to increase your compression with a turbocharger or supercharger. I wouldn't worry about pre-ignition because propane has a pretty high octane rating.

because propane and natural gas has such a high octane rating it will probably never be used as a primary fuel in a diesel engine. (diesel's octane rating is around 25)
