Default Propane as an alternative fuel

I have been researching propane as an altenative fuel for a while. It seems this would be a very good idea but the support for it is some what varied. any one want to chime in on this???

I have read a lot about the diesel guys using propane injection as a power adder, but not as a primary fuel source. I would be interested to look into this a little more. I think I have happened upon a few threads that talk about propane conversions in cars. Im going to look into it further.

I actually did some reading and was able to find a thread over on mini2.com that talks about doing a propane conversion on a Mini Cooper. it was a pretty interesting thread. Check it out here.

There are thousands of cars of all types around here with Propane conversions. Very poorly done, illegally using home tanks, but they do it.
Natural gas is also an alternative. I have a E350 that runs exclusively on natural gas. Only problem if it runs out. Also have a couple pickups that run on either natural gas or gasoline. Natural gas reduces the power about 20%, but ends up with about a 50% cost saving with our current fuel costs.

You lose between 10%-20% of your power because propane needs much more air/fuel to run, in order to get the power back you'll have to increase your compression with a turbocharger or supercharger. I wouldn't worry about pre-ignition because propane has a pretty high octane rating.

because propane and natural gas has such a high octane rating it will probably never be used as a primary fuel in a diesel engine. (diesel's octane rating is around 25)

Thought I would put my two cents worth in about getting more MPG. There is a great product out that you can use in your crank case and fuel tank that will increase your MPG. I have personally been using it now for four months and have gotten great results. In fact just after one tank of fuel I was getting four more MPG in my 1998 Nissan Pathfinder LE-V6, city/highway driving without changing my driving habits. If you would like to check it out just click this link for more information. Another benefit of this product is lower emissions of CO. In fact I have seen some users go from not passing their emissions test the first time, then adding the product to a tank of fuel and going in without changing any parts and then passing their second test. Happy Motoring but then with the high price of fuel how could it be Happy!!!

Thank you "DOSA1534" for endorsing the DOSA manufacured product...

Unless they're nearly giving that stuff away, it makes no economical sense to use it. I'd also like to see what happens when you turn the key, after adding something whose descriptor is 'solvent' and burns like a gasoline equivalent, to a vehicles CRANKCASE.

On the subject of explosions, I used to have a summer job at a propane plant. The single safety video I viewed demonstrated and explained that a single BBQ tank can completely level a small house. Getting in a crash with a car that has an engine full of Dosa-expensive-water and a 16lb non-transport rated tank of propane would be like T-boning a nuke.

Yeah, it wouldn't be pretty, but you think hydrogen would be any better? H-bomb fender bender..
However if vehicals were made to run off of this stuff from the factory.. the propane tanks would survive. Someone was telling me about this container they're going to use to transport large amounts of nuclear waste.. they hit it with a freight train locomotive and it just scratched the paint.
